Founded: Around 814 BCE by settlers from Tyre.
Name Origin: From the Phoenician Qart-ḥadašt, meaning "New City."
Carthage preserved the maritime culture and religion of Tyre, including worship of Melqart (later identified with Baal or Heracles).
It became a trading empire, controlling routes across the Mediterranean, much like Tyre had done earlier.
